Originally, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Kutztown University in 2006. I decided to go back to Kutztown University in 2010 for a dual degree in Special Education and Elementary Education.  After earning my teaching certification, I gained valuable experience at Pennridge School District in various positions, Boyertown School District as a Learning Support Teacher, and Innovative Arts Academy Charter School in Special Education at both the middle and high school level.

Living in the area, I knew about SCSC, and I believed in their mission.  I believe all students can be successful with the support of the community around them.  I’m so excited to have been given the opportunity to work here with such an amazing team!

SCSC has provided me with an exhilarating professional experience. When I started as a teacher in 2001, I could see the makings of a great learning environment for students and teachers. When I assumed the role of Director of Education in 2002, I was tasked with shaping an educational culture that placed the needs of students at the center of decision making. In 2005, I completed my administrative work at the University of Pennsylvania, an invaluable time to consider and expand upon my fledgling ideas of educational leadership. Over the years, I have valued the school being a laboratory where new ideas and theories can be tried. From the 100 Book Challenge to Singapore Math, in our earliest years, we focused on fostering student independence and hard work. We created a challenging and accessible educational experience for all students, which culminated in our designation as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence in 2013. Over the years, prioritizing the whole child has resulted in examinations of resilience, growth mindset, and introversion/extroversion. Most recently, I have advanced student engagement and 21st century skills by promoting Design Thinking and STEAM initiatives.

SCSC is an amazing example of a collective will driven by a mission that looks to remove limits that are too often a part of public education.  SCSC is grounded in always considering, “What if?” Individualizing and including everyone is central to our vision of education; this requires not only commitment, but also new ways of thinking about organizational processes, engagement, and equity.  Over the years, the opportunities to be challenged intellectually have been limitless, and with each year, we continue to provide academic excellence to the local community . Our staff is talented beyond words. Our families are exuberant in their commitment to SCSC. Our board sustains the mission and supports our professional work entirely.

I am looking forward to the next challenge, opportunity, and experience, while continuing to advocate for School Choice for all students across the state.

I am an elementary school teacher in the 3/4 pod here at Souderton Charter School Collaborative.  I hold a Pennsylvania Certificate in the K-6th grades. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, from Delaware Valley University in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. In addition to this I also hold a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Holy Family University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I was previously in Central Bucks School District and I have taught in K-5th grades. My love of people and animals has also lead me to be certified and to teach special needs Hippotherapy to pediatric students with The North American Handicapped Riding Association through PATH International at Flying High Equestrian Therapy located at Gwyn Meadows Farm in Gwynedd, Pennsylvania.

My experience with hippotherapy lead me to connect with SCSC and this drew me to SCSC’s dedication to students and learning. I am always amazed by the dedication of the staff and families at SCSC to the students’ success! The innovative educational environment and experiential learning combined with hands on project based learning  and strong parent partnerships is at the heart of what all the educators foster for the students here at SCSC!

Upon graduating from Manhattanville College with a B.Mus. in Music Education and a minor concentration in Psychology, I was hired by the Young Adult Institute (NYC) as a counselor and music specialist to work with teens/young adults with special needs. My love of music, teaching, and working with children with varying educational and physical abilities led me to take courses in music therapy at New York University. I completed my graduate studies with a M.A. in Music Therapy at Temple University. As a music therapist and educator, I have been fortunate to work with children of all ages in a variety of settings.

I was drawn to SCSC because of the incredible possibilities to collaborate and innovate. With my fine arts colleagues, we have been able to provide a Creative Arts program that is inclusive and engaging. Teaching music to our students in Kindergarten through 8th grade is both a joy and a privilege that allows me the unique opportunity to know all of the students and their families well. I am a firm believer in educating the whole child, working alongside parents, furthering the advancement of the adult learner, bringing the community together through music and collaborating with a talented staff in a creative and caring environment — I have found all of this and more while teaching here at the Souderton Charter School Collaborative.

The last word of the film Won't Back Down, a story based on real events about two remarkable women advocating for extraordinary charter school education for all children  (Sound like anyone you know?), is HOPE. Gets me every time! HOPE...as a parent, it's what I felt the instant I walked through the doors of SCSC.  As an educator, it's what I feel when my coworkers deeply believe in each individual child's ability, and when Responsive Classroom techniques are implemented by students.

I come to SCSC with a dual-undergrad degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education from Temple and a Master's in Education from Gwynedd-Mercy.  Before my years with SCSC, I taught in Arizona, Northeast Philadelphia, and Warrington. With my colleagues, we have developed the Best Self Curriculum Initiative, a weekly class with grades K-5 of applying viable strategies such as perseverance as a strength, independent problem solving, and self-empowering skills.  Our aim is to first walk with students on their road of self-awareness and discovery, and then identify strategies and skills that unlock their personal potential.  What draws me to SCSC is the firm belief in educational equity, high expectionations for all accompanied with high support for all, and putting the human first.

I have always had the desire to enter the teaching profession from early on.  I completed my undergraduate degree in Social Work, at Gordon College in MA. After completing my degree, I worked in Children Services as a Foster Care Worker in South Philadelphia for 3 years.  It was at this time that I decided I wanted to continue my educational journey in the area of special education and elementary education. While working as a literacy intern teacher in the Philadelphia School District, I completed my Master’s Degree in Education at Arcadia University.  The time that I spent working within the Philadelphia area greatly impacted my life in a very positive way.

It was at this juncture that I happened upon SCSC. I truly believe that SCSC is a perfect fit for me. The collaborative approach, hands on learning environment and parental involvement make SCSC an exciting and unique school to be teaching at.  Everyday that I enter the classroom, I am inspired by both the students and staff around me to be my very best. As an undergraduate at the University of Rochester, NY, I majored in psychology. By the end of my senior year, however, I had decided that I was more interested in childhood education than psychology as a career. Yearning to travel and also wanting to learn more about my cultural heritage, I moved to Japan after graduation. It was there that I started my professional career, teaching English as a foreign language in a children's school. After a few years abroad, I came back to New York and earned a master's degree in Elementary Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. For the next ten years, I taught at P.S. 116 in Manhattan, initially in fourth grade and later as a kindergarten teacher.

In 2008, I moved to Pennsylvania, and searched for a school that embodies my ideals for education: genuine, meaningful learning experiences, collaborative teaching and learning, student ownership, caring and dedicated professionals… and I found that school in SCSC.  I feel quite fortunate to be included in this wonderful community of educators and families.

My teaching career began as a teenager in the Quakertown School district after completing a 2 year high school internship with one of my inspiring old elementary teachers. I knew after completing the internship, I was meant to be a teacher.  I earned my B.S in Elementary Education and English as a Second Language specialist degree at Eastern University. After completing my degree in 2008, I began the job search for ELL teaching jobs. My heart was always drawn from my diverse cultural background and I wanted to help those who were learning English. I was fortunate to land a job in a charter school in Chester, which is where I grew a deeper love and experience in teaching English Language Learners.

I was so fortunate to have heard about SCSC and was welcomed so eagerly onboard. The idea of working collaboratively with all grade levels at SCSC has only strengthened me as an educator. I am passionate about teaching English language learners and helping the community of SCSC see and appreciate the diversity around us.

I am a registered and licensed Occupational Therapist with additional certifications in Pediatric Neuro-Developmental Treatment and Sensory Integration.  I had my own private practice for twelve years (CAN Occupational Therapy) specializing in treatment of children with sensory and motor challenges. I began my pediatric therapy career at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and then worked for the Pittsburgh based Easter Seals providing school based therapy.  Upon moving from Pittsburgh to the Philadelphia area, I continued my pediatric therapy work in schools and homes. I am known for having a keen therapeutic eye for recognizing and identifying what the underlying difficulties present within the child that are the root of the child’s challenges so that these can be optimally addressed to gain the child’s best outcome and function.  My belief is that it’s important that children have fun in therapy because this produces the best outcome as then they are eager to come, participate and put forth their maximum efforts resulting in very positive gains of skills and growth of abilities. I respect the children and that’s reciprocated back to me by them with how they are in their therapy sessions and work.

I became part of SCSC, as the school’s Occupational Therapist, beginning Sept of 2013.  My attachment to SCSC is two-fold: 1) Everyone (staff and students) at SCSC all feel enthusiastic about and love being at SCSC!  2) That passion, in itself, evokes a higher caliber of care, learning, outcomes and success! I am proud to be part of this and to help contribute to it.

My name is Paty Kulathum. I was born and raised in Mexico City. I’ve been in the US for the last 23 years. I’m married and have 3 children. I went to College and graduated as a CPA and later did a diploma in Marketing. My love for Languages was born many years ago when I was living in Mexico. I went to a Language school from England where I learned to read and write in English. I graduated from there after 9 semesters. After that I decided to do another class to practice English from the US. That class was 3 hours every day for an entire year. Not much later after that, I came to live in the US in 1995 after getting married. It was then when I decided to change gears in my career and start teaching. It’s been 11 years since I started teaching and I love it more each day. I also work as a Voice Over actor giving my voice in Spanish to several different businesses and projects. This summer I started narrating books in Spanish too. I have now eight books in Audible/Amazon. One of my biggest passions in life is learning, so I’m studying Italian too.

SCSC gave me the opportunity to do what I love the most - teaching Spanish. I feel honored to work in such an amazing school surrounded by so many wonderful and authentically caring people.

Since a young age, I’ve been captivated by the outdoor world (biology major).  I also spent hours teaching my dolls and stuffed animals all about the important things in life (educator).  Throughout my studies at Eastern University, much of my coursework provided me the opportunity to be academically challenged in an outdoor environment.  My educational philosophy and methodology continued to develop throughout my early years of teaching at Radnor Middle School.  Most influential was the time I spent in the WATERSHED Program, a nationally recognized integrated learning program that immerses students in purposeful fieldwork.  Over the years, I've fed my curiosity, furthered my knowledge and refined my fieldwork experiences while attaining a Master of Environmental Science Education degree at Arcadia University.

I'd kept an eye on the Souderton Charter School Collaborative since its inception, and am now thrilled to be part of such a dynamic learning community.  Julie Cook and I spent the early months of 2002 developing SEASONS, the Souderton Charter School Collaborative's own integrated program that knits together state standards by connecting many relevant concepts from the natural world and our local community to the seasonal year. Our pioneer year with the SEASONS Class of 2004 led us on many exciting learning adventures and allowed us to serve middle school students in a unique and meaningful way. SEASONS continues to grow and evolve today, thanks to the unique strengths, commitment, and balance that Adrienne Koch brings, along with a new crop of eager sixth graders just entering middle school!

SCSC is truly an amazing place. While I have been content with all of the schools I have taught at throughout my career, the unique opportunities that this school offers does not happen everywhere. I love the co-teaching aspect of SCSC and all of the individualization it offers to all of the students. Not only that, but we are given such flexibility with our schedules that we regularly work with the other classrooms and students throughout the school in a variety of ways. We have so many opportunities for our children that aren’t provided in a standard education setting, such as design-thinking challenges, Tinker Lab, volunteering… the list goes on and on! I love my school and all of the possibilities it provides to both the students and the staff.

Born and raised in New Jersey, I was always a diligent, hard-working student. After serving as the salutatorian of my high school class, I completed a certificate program at The Berkeley School and began a career with Dow Jones/The Wall Street Journal.  Five years later, having grown restless in the business world, I decided to return to school to pursue what had always been my true calling, teaching. In 1994, I graduated from Kean University with a B.A. in Elementary Education and a B.A. in Psychology and began my career as a preschool teacher at St. Joseph the Worker School in Orefield, PA. The following year, an offer to teach kindergarten in the Bernards Township School District sent me back to New Jersey. For nine of my twelve years in Bernards Township I taught kindergarten; the balance of my tenure was spent as a literacy support instructor and first grade teacher. In 2005, I earned an M.A. in Teaching and Learning with a Concentration in Reading Instruction from Nova Southeastern University.

In 2009, after marrying and relocating to Lansdale, PA, I began the daunting task of job hunting. While searching for a new position, I was invited to SCSC to speak with Jennifer and Wendy regarding an opening for a kindergarten teacher; SCSC has been my home ever since.  I have been fortunate enough to experience SCSC as both a staff member and a parent and, on both sides of the fence, the grass is quite green. As a staff member, I enjoy the privilege of creating and implementing my own unique curriculum while encouraging my students to grow socially, emotionally and academically, while, as a parent, I have had the opportunity to watch my children thrive in a nurturing, yet challenging environment.

I was very fortunate to have spent my early professional years with Johnson and Johnson. After leaving J&J and receiving my master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania, I consulted with Fortune 50 companies on issues related to overall business effectiveness, with a focus on improving an organization's culture and analyzing its business processes.  These professional experiences compelled me to ponder changes that were necessary to promote resilient learning among adults within the public education system. Thus, the Souderton Charter School Collaborative was born.

If we really hope to improve the educational system, educators must be removed from the isolation of their classrooms and brought together to reflect, brainstorm and collaborate. Together as an SCSC staff, we are empowered.  We are striving to reinvent schooling from the ground up. At school every day we hear the voice of each child - even the child who has a difficult time finding her voice. When you visit our school you will see children and adults alike involved in purposeful activities and you will hear a diverse group of people interacting and asking questions. You will experience an environment where we are learning to do more than react to our environment; we are learning to impact positively the world around us. I am inspired by the wisdom and insight of the pioneer in the field of organizational dynamics, Mary Parker Follett, who said, "The aim of every...organization should be not to share power but increase power, to seek the method by which power can be increased in all."  I am proud to be working together with my colleagues to do just that. Our accomplishments rest on the shoulders of our faculty and families, past and present. The synergy of collective wisdom and power is changing a small corner of the world.

This passion leads me to Indian Valley Nursery School where I taught Physical Education and exercise classes for adults. I also taught at a local private school teaching Physical Education. In addition, I have previous experience as a high school guidance secretary, teaching assistant, classroom aide and nursery school teacher. I continue to teach adult classes at the local Indian Valley YMCA. I was thrilled when I saw that there was an opening at the Souderton Charter School where I now teach Physical Education.

I feel that the charter school enhances student learning with a project based work approach and provides many opportunities for field experiences. Kari Shutts - Elementary Teacher

I am a graduate of Millersville University where I studied elementary education with a concentration in science.  I went on to further my education at Penn State and Saint Joseph’s University. I began my career teaching in Philadelphia.  I spent 5 year there, teaching 3rd grade to many wonderful students. I left Philadelphia to pursue a position at Seven Generations Charter School.  I taught both 3rd and 6th grade there before coming to SCSC.

Here at SCSC I am a ¾ teacher in the Sycamores classroom.  I believe that learning should be fun. Students should be given the opportunity to discover the joys of learning and how they learn best.  I enjoy being part of SCSC, because it is a home that values all students, staff and families and how each is an unique learner.I am able to be creative and support each of my students to be their best selves.

I have been a part of the 1st and 2nd grade teaching team for many years at SCSC and have enjoyed collaborating with my colleagues to create an exciting learning program for our students.  First and second grade is a time of such academic and emotional growth and helping students during this critical time in their lives is so very rewarding! It was the school’s philosophies and mission that drew me to become a part of the SCSC community many years ago and continues to drive me as I help our little ones grow.  I am proud to be a part of an extraordinary effort to change the way we look at public education.

I graduated from Grove City College and have my elementary and early childhood certifications.  I am currently enrolled in a program at Slippery Rock University and am working to earn my masters degree in reading, reading specialist certification, and instructional coaching endorsement.  Most of my career was spent at SCSC teaching first and second grade. I took time away from teaching to start my family, but luckily SCSC welcomed me back a few years ago. I am currently working with students in kindergarten through fourth grade in the area of literacy.  My other job at SCSC involves work with special education.

SCSC was just beginning when I decided to interview for one of the final teaching positions available.  When I heard that a key element of the Charter’s philosophy was Project Based Learning, I was immediately interested in this student-centered, experiential learning environment.  I studied the Project Approach and the Reggio Emilia approach during my time at Grove City and was thrilled to apply my knowledge of this philosophy of teaching. I have watched SCSC grow and flourish since its beginning days.  Now, I appreciate the flexibility I have to try new approaches and programs that best meet the needs of our learners. I love being a part of a community that collaborates and learns from one another to be the best for our students.

Born and raised in Bucks County, I have spent the majority of my life living in Pennsylvania and have always considered the Philadelphia area my home.  After graduating from high school I enrolled in the Pennsylvania State University where I pursued a degree and certification in Elementary Education. I graduated from PSU and immediately spent the following spring substitute teaching and tutoring in the Levittown area.  Later, I taught third grade in Virginia, and after two years, decided it was time to move back home. Thankfully, I was lucky enough to come across an employment opportunity here at SCSC. I knew from my very first visit that this is where I wanted to be, and I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to join this extraordinary community. Since then, I have been leading the Hickories 3/4 classroom, and have been furthering my career through my pursuance of a Masters degree in Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment from Cabrini University.

SCSC is a wonderful community, which grants me an opportunity to work with, and learn from, some of the greatest educators and academic minds I have ever met.  As a teacher here, I’m given the enriching opportunity to work alongside talented co-teachers and collaborate with a driven grade level team to develop hands on, experiential, and authentic learning experiences and then deliver them to my students on a daily basis. SCSC is a refreshing institution because it is truly student first, which recognizes the importance of nurturing and developing the whole child, not just the mind. Students are treated as unique individuals, and it is a gift to get to know each one of my students on a personal level, and to work with them and their families to develop individual learning plans that meet their specific needs and desires. It is a joy to come to school everyday and work as part of a community that is as cohesive as SCSC is.

After receiving degrees in Physical Therapy and working as a Pediatric Physical Therapist, I worked in the business world and spent time at home raising my daughter and son.  Eventually, I had the opportunity to work in my children’s school as a teacher’s aide and reconnect with my first passion--teaching. I then became the English Language Development/ESL teacher for the school.  After earning my Master’s Degree in Special Education and certifications in elementary and special education, as well as middle school math, secondary English, and English as a Second Language, I continued working as an English Language Development teacher.

For me, teaching at SCSC is like coming home.  I love working with parents and colleagues to help children reach their potential and be included in the classroom.  Fortunately, I have the opportunity to do this every day as a teacher working with students in the Oaks, Palms, and Willows classrooms.  Being able to engage students with collaborative and experiential learning empowers me to help students become excited, lifelong learners.  It is my joy and privilege to be a part of this learning community.

For as long as I can remember, I have known that I wanted to be an educator so that I could teach and nurture children like so many wonderful teachers had done for me. To this end, I attended The College of New Jersey where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Psychology. Upon graduating, I took a position in my childhood school district, while at the same time pursuing a Master’s degree in Educational Technology, also at The College of New Jersey.  Upon getting married and moving away from the area, I began looking for new opportunities, and I was lucky enough to find SCSC!

From the first moment I walked into SCSC, I knew that it was remarkably unique.  Educators and students alike are encouraged to pursue their passions, learning and growing alongside one another; this freedom has allowed me to further pursue my love of technology and finding meaningful ways to incorporate it into the classroom.  I greatly appreciate all that I have learned from working together with the staff, students, and family members at SCSC to create and reflect on innovative learning experiences where every child succeeds! Every day is an exciting and authentic learning experience at SCSC, and it is my great pleasure to be a part of this amazing school!

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.  Indeed it's the only thing that ever has." This quote from Margaret Mead has helped define my life and teaching career. As the daughter of two gifted teachers, the values I carry into my classroom were formed at an early age. Through their example, I learned to find the gifts in each of my students and help them fulfill their potential. After earning my Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science and my teaching credential in Elementary Education and Middle School Mathematics, I began teaching in North Carolina and then Pennsylvania. I am pursuing my Masters of Education in Social Emotional Learning from Delaware Valley University.

I truly love what I do and am excited to teach at a collaborative school like SCSC. At SCSC we are encouraged to create engaging experiences for children that help them develop independence and grow to become compassionate, curious individuals. Watching children work together on a research project, laugh with their senior home buddy, or proudly share their own hard-cover book are the type of moments I live for. At SCSC I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to help all students learn and grow, both socially and academically, into their best selves.
