    Who authorizes charter schools?

    This varies from state to state, depending on the state’s charter law. Across the country there are generally four types of entities allowed to authorize charter schools: the local school board, state universities, community colleges, and the state board of education. In Pennsylvania, individuals or groups seeking to establish a public charter school must apply to the local school board of the District in which the school will be located. If a school district rejects a charter school application, the applicant can appeal to the state’s Charter Appeals Board (CAB). Cyber charter applicants apply directly to the Pennsylvania Department of Education.     SCSC’s original application was denied by Souderton Area School District (SASD) Board and appealed to CAB. CAB overturned SASD denial in January of 2000. SCSC’s charter was renewed by SASD in 2004, 2009, 2014.
